Canada’s inflation accelerated less than economists expected last month, staying below the central bank’s target because of lower costs for mortgage interest, natural gas and clothing. Prices rose 1.3 percent in December from a year ago, and fell 0.3 percent from November, Statistics Canada said today in Ottawa. Economists predicted annual inflation would speed to 1.6 percent from November’s 1 percent, and that prices would fall 0.1 percent on a monthly basis, according to the median estimates of Bloomberg News surveys. Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney yesterday kept his benchmark interest rate at a record low 0.25 percent, and said he plans to keep it there through June unless the outlook for prices veers from his forecast. The bank also said that “considerable excess supply remains” and inflation won’t return to policy makers’ 2 percent target until the third quarter of next year. “For the Bank of Canada, this report underscores the lack of inflation pressure in the economy,” said Sal Guatieri, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. “It gives the bank ammunition to keep interest rates low later into this year.” The Canadian dollar weakened 1.1 percent to C$1.0433 per U.S. dollar at 7:13 a.m. in Toronto, from C$1.0314 yesterday. Price Declines Natural gas costs dropped 31 percent in December from a year ago, while Statistics Canada’s index of mortgage interest cost declined 4.9 percent. Clothing and footwear costs fell 0.8 percent. The rise in inflation from a year earlier was led by a 26 percent jump in gasoline costs. Prior gasoline-price declines helped drive the inflation rate below zero for four straight months through September, the longest period since 1953. The so-called core inflation rate, which excludes gasoline and seven other volatile items, was 1.5 percent on an annual basis in December, unchanged from the previous month. On a monthly basis, core inflation fell 0.3 percent. The Bank of Canada said yesterday that core inflation has been “slightly higher than expected in recent months.” Economists forecast the annual core inflation rate would be 1.7 percent, based on the median of 26 estimates, and fall 0.2 percent on a monthly basis. The inflation rate was 0.3 percent for all of 2009, the lowest since 1994, Statistics Canada said.

Costa Maya Real Estate is the newest, and in fact the last, up-and-coming beachfront market on the Mexican Caribbean, and the real estate prospects are closely tied to the ever-growing tourism in the area. As tourism grows, more Americans, Canadians and other nationalities are taking interest in Mexico Land purchases in the area to build their dream home on the beachfront, in addition to other property types.

Costa Maya is the last last stretch of beachfront on the Mexican Caribbean. At the north of the Caribbean Coast (about 4.5 hrs away) places like Cancun and Playa del Carmen have already grown as international favorites for both tourism and real estate. Tulum, with plans for a new international airport moving ahead, is also on its way to establishing a good deal of success.

The same ship is lined up to visit the island of Cozumel next, another established cruise tourism and real estate market in the area. The ship spanned more than 300 yards of the Mahahual pier, giving an amazing view, even more so for the few hours in which it shared the dock with the Pacific Dream, a Pullman Tour ship that brought more than 3000 passengers. That’s a total of more than 10,000 visitors!

For tourists arriving to the Costa Maya area, there are many archeological sites, lagoons, the world-famous Meso-American reef for diving and spectacular beaches. It is expected that in the near feature, the south of the Mexican Caribbean will continue to attract cruise arrivals and other visitors, consolidating the area’s reputation.

The relatively light tourism which the area has already attracted has brought a variety of foreigners who enjoy the quiet, relaxed and laid-back lifestyle of Costa Maya. Besides beachfront land for building, there are also beautiful Mexico Homes and condos available, both in town, and out along the beachfront.

Though Curacao may seem like your average Caribbean island, this vacation hotspot has inherited a cosmopolitan sensibility unlike any other destination. Though colonized by the Dutch, Curacao boasts an incredibly diverse population, with 45 distinct nationalities represented in its modest population. Over the years, these diverse groups have had an incredible influence on the local culture. In the world of food, ethnic traditions have blended with local cuisine to create one-of-a-kind recipes. With the culinary styles of locations as diverse as South and Central America, Southeast Asia and the haute cuisine of Western Europe represented on the island, Curacao may boast some of the most delicious and provocative food in the world. Additionally, as the namesake of the popular sugary liqueur, Curacao has certainly grown a sweet tooth – best represented by the island’s original dessert recipes.

Despite the influence of so many cultures on Curacao’s cuisine, there are plenty of popular recipes that pre-date the island’s cosmopolitan development. The best example of this unique Caribbean style is iguana stew. Prepared just as you would imagine, the dish is a favorite of locals (who say the meat greatly resembles chicken), though it often takes an adventurous tourist to have a taste. Traditional Dutch recipes dating to the early colonial period such as keshi yena – a baked dish with plenty of Gouda cheese, meat and other fresh ingredients – are also popular in many of Curacao’s restaurants.

Much to the surprise of many visitors, Indonesian cuisine plays an important role in Curacao’s culinary scene. Brought to the island by the Dutch after establishing colonies in Southeast Asia, Indonesian ingredients and cooking techniques have found their way into many favorite local recipes. One such dish is rijisttafel (Dutch for “rice table”), a combination of rice, vegetables, meat or seafood and the hearty kick of chili peppers. Asian seasonings and preparations are also commonly used in Curacao when serving fresh local seafood such as mahi mahi and red snapper.

Despite the fascinating culinary atmosphere on the island, Curacao is certainly best known as the namesake of a popular liqueur. As the story goes, Curacao liqueur was an accidental creation. After establishing the first colony on Curacao, the Spaniards attempted to grow Valencia oranges. However, the oranges reacted to the vastly different climate, dramatically altering the fruit’s distinctive citrus flavor. Over time, the Valencia became the sour Lahara. Years later, growers realized that the peels of Lahara oranges contained sweet-scented oils. Through experimentation, the sugary exterior of the Lahara orange – along with a number of unusual spices – found its way into the recipe for Curacao liqueur. Today, the orange-flavored drink named for its birthplace is enjoyed throughout the world.

If you try some of the island’s namesake liqueur, you might also want to keep some dessert nearby. While Aruba might hold claim to the best beer of the ABC Islands, Curacao definitely cooks up the most distinctive sweets. One of the most popular desserts is a luxurious Caribbean take on the fruit cake known as bolo pretu – a rich, dark cake stuffed with Caribbean fruits.

As might be expected in the Caribbean, coconut finds its way into a number of recipes. A simple dessert known as djente kacho – or dog’s tooth – is merely fresh coconut cooked in a sugary syrup. The confection known as kokada finds the coconut cooked flat in patties, the result bearing some similarity to the macaroon. In the bakeries and restaurants of Curacao, you will also find sunchi (bite-size meringues), panseiku (pralines made with toasted peanuts, prepared with almond essence and brown sugar) and tentalaria (finely ground peanuts and cashews served in a fresh sugar cream).

Even some traditionally savory items served at lunch and dinner are prepared with the sweet tooth in mind. For instance, a dish called ayaka is cooked like a traditional meat tamale, yet banana leaves are used in lieu of cornhusks to lend a bit of sweetness to the dish. Likewise, one of the most popular appetizers in Curacao is a sweet soup composed of plantains and vegetables, seasoned with cinnamon and peppers.

For those wondering about the best Caribbean destinations to visit, the diverse culinary traditions of Curacao certainly give travelers one more reason to visit this unique island paradise.

When traveling, there really are a lot of things that need to be prepared. Not only should you have your tickets on hand, but you have to know vital aspects about your destination, too. With regards to train travel, passengers and tourists who are new to it should familiarize themselves with several important points, as there are many aspects of train travel that are entirely different from traveling by air. Doing so will ensure that the trip goes smoothly, safely, and that every one will enjoy the ride.

- Always have your train ticket with you. Just like all your other valuable travel documents such as your ID card and passport, your ticket should be well guarded. This is especially important if you are using a multiple type of pass. Carefully read the information indicated on your ticket, so you know the time for boarding and the platform that you are to wait on. When traveling on the train, keep the train pass with you in an easily accessible place, so that you can pull it out if needed. You do not want to have to be digging around in your bag for it.

- Get to know your destination points well. Using a map or a tourist guide, you should be able to identify key areas, as well as basic signs regarding your train. This will prevent you from missing your stop or boarding the wrong train. Most train stations have passenger information in English, and you can also inquire at ticket offices if you have any concerns.

- Be sure that you have enough food with you as you travel. Depending on the length of travel time, which can be anywhere from an hour to several hours, trains can provide first class passengers with food and drinks. If you are using a second class ticket, you can bring your own food beforehand, buy snacks on your next stop, or purchase them from on the train.

- You should be familiar about luggage rules and guidelines on your train. Usually, each passenger should not have more than three items of luggage, and the size standards may vary depending on which country you are in. For example, if you are traveling in Europe, there are certain trains that do not allow pets, large pieces of luggage, or bicycles. Take note of these before you make a reservation or purchase your ticket.

- Another note about luggage. It will be wise to properly label all your belongings. You can store your bags on overhead racks in the train, or even under your seat. Though you may have the option of having some luggage stowed in the luggage car of your train, not all stations have porters who can pick them up for you. Organizing your luggage properly makes finding them easy. According to sources, train stations are not liable for any luggage losses.

If you plan well about your trip and are smart about these tips when traveling by train, you will have no worries getting around the places you are to visit. In this way, you maximize your trip and also make it memorable.

HONG KONG – In nations around the Indian Ocean, thousands scrambled for higher ground Wednesday after powerful quakes triggered fears of a disaster in a region all too familiar with the power of a tsunami. Warnings that destructive waves could tear into coastal regions sparked mass evacuations from India to Kenya, reawakening painful memories of the catastrophic 2004 tsunami that claimed nearly a quarter of a million lives. The 8.6-magnitude undersea quake and strong aftershocks hit off Indonesia’s Sumatra island just a few hundred kilometres from the epicentre of that deadly event, with witnesses saying they felt the ground shake for well over a minute. In Indonesia’s Banda Aceh, which was devastated by the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami, people raced from tall buildings and headed inland as warnings of another destructive tsunami were issued across the region. The alerts were cancelled several hours later after the waves proved to be limited and at their highest less than a metre. But in the hours before the all-clear, there were chaotic scenes as people grabbed their families and raced through crowded streets, with motorbikes and cars jostling for space.
